TECHNICAL RELEASE NOTES
Version 1.1 is a bug fix release that removes the unnecessary dependency on ODBC which
was causing some installations to fail.
Before you install RCT PiNGer, please note the following:
The program has been written in Microsoft Visual Basic 4.
This was released by Microsoft before Windows 98 was released.
I have developed and tested it on Win 98SE (UK Version).
It is has been tested on: Win 95, Win 98, Win 98SE, Win ME.
It is untested on Win 2K, Win XP but should run without problems.
Because the program is written in VB, it installs a number of dynamic link libraries (DLL)
files in your $WinSysPath directory. $WinSysPath is usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM but I know
that a number of you have got dual boot systems so maybe this will be different on your
PC.
The files that this setup will write to your $WinSysPath directory are:
MFC40.DLL 4/23/1999 version 4.1.0.6140
THREED32.OCX 7/26/1995 version 1.0.41.0
The setup program WILL NOT overwrite any of the above if you have newer versions
on your PC. (It is VERY likely that you will have versions of some of the above already)
However, you may like to make backups of any of the above before you install RCTPiNGer.
You should make sure that you have no other programs running when you install RCT PiNGer.
If any programs are running which are using the above, and RCT PiNGer wants to update them,
you will get an Abort, Rety, Ignore message. If you choose Ignore, I cannot guarantee that
RCT PiNGer will run with older versions of these files. You should instead close down other
programs and Retry. If all else fails, choose Abort and RCTPiNGer will clean up and leave no
trace of itself.
The SETUP program places an RCTPiNGer icon on your Start>Programs menu. It also updates your registry
so that RCT PiNGer can be uninstalled using Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel.
There is no User Guide. All help is on-line in the program.
UNINSTALLING RCTPiNGer
(This section appears first so that you remember to uninstall any previous versions
before installing the new version of PCTPiNGer)
From your Control Panel, run Add/Remove Programs and select RCT PiNGer.
INSTALLING RCTPiNGer
(If you [successfully or unsuccesfully] installed previous versions of RCTPiNGer
please uninstall it using the instructions in the section above before
installing the new version.)
1) First create a temporary folder and place the downloaded ZIP file in it
2) Unzip the file using winzip or similar. This creates a number of files in your temporary folder.
(If you don't have one, you can get a copy of winzip from www.winzip.com)
3) From the temporary folder, run SETUP.EXE
4) It's then safe to delete the temporary directory you created in step 1) (but
you might want to keep a copy of the ZIP file!)
KNOWN BUGS
1) There is no error handling code at all when RCTPiNGer saves files. If you don't have enough space
on your disk or use invalid filenames for example, you'll just get a run-time error message.
IF THE PROGRAM CRASHES, OR YOUR SYSTEM CRASHES WHEN RCT PiNGer IS RUNNING...
You may find that you have a BMP file left behind on your PC called RCTPINGER<filename>.BMP This will be
in the same folder as your RCT screen dumps or TP4 files. <filename> will be the same as the name of the
last RCT screen dump or TP4 file that you opened. It is safe to delete this, but if you delete it while
RCTPiNGer is running, you'll get a run time error.
